What are dreams?

Dreams are made up of series of mental pictures that form during sleep. People, places and events in dreams often seem very real to the person who is dreaming. Anything that can happen to you in real life can happen in a dream. However, many times dreams do not seem to make sense. Time might be important in your dreams, you might be at one place in one minute, and the next minute you might be somewhere else.
Strong feelings you had during the day can influence the contenct of your dreams. Dreams can be pleasant or not. Unreal events often take place in dreams. You can dream about an imaginary event.
Some people think they dream only once in a while. Others think they don`t dream at all. Sleep studies, however, indicate that everyone dreams every night. If you think you don`t dream, you probably just forget your dreams by the time you wake up.
Scientists agree that dreaming is very important to your health. During sleep studies, scientists woke people at the start of dreaming. When people were allowed to go back to sleep they began to dream right away. These interruptions were repeated several times. The next day people felt tired and irritable. When they were allowed to sleep without interruption, the people made up all the dreaming time they had lost and then awakened feeling refreshed.
Scientists do not know what causes dreams or why people need to dream. Some experts think that dreams help people to sort out their feelings. Others say that dreams reflect recent experiences someone has had. We can`t control our dreams, we can just enjoy them, of course when they are pleasant.
